Love Letter to Your Work
Put it in writing
I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter …
Joe Young
A while back, I felt disconnected from my business. Not my clients, mind you, but my business itself. Granted, it was a time when there were outside priorities, challenges, and distractions. It’s not really important why. When I finally woke up and admitted my business and I were estranged, I knew I had to do something, anything, to start connecting again. It felt like it was time for a heart-to-heart with my work. Time to get real and admit the disconnect, see how I truly felt, and what I wanted to do about it.
Since I am a writer, I did what felt the most natural for me – I wrote my business a letter. I was doing some other writing, and this letter just began swirling around in my thoughts. Here is a bit of what I wrote:
Hello Again –
It feels like I have ignored you for way too long. I have not fed and cared for you, nurtured you and showed you love. I’m sorry for that. I allowed myself to be pulled off my path for the last year. But now I’m back.
I am so grateful you have stood unflinchingly by as I neglected you. As of today, that has changed…
(Some text omitted – not ready to share it yet
So, together let’s figure out what we can offer the world, OK? There are no should or should nots here. Find our place of joy and inspiration.
I promise I’m not going anywhere. I am 100% committed and excited about what we create!
Thank you!
Now, before you think I’ve gone ‘round the bend, trust that this kind of stuff really works. In fact, I have led groups, workshops, and even my private clients do something similar from time to time. Their feedback makes a pretty compelling case that it worked for them too.
Writing a letter to your work can be a powerful way to get clear on how you truly feel and relate to it. I wrote wrote this six months ago, and as I reread it, I am surprised and delighted by how many things have happened, or are in motion that I promised to my work. I hadn’t read that letter until today, and the mere action of putting words to my swirling thoughts set the intention, so the action could happen.
I invite you to play along with me here, OK? Time to put it in writing!
-
Find a quiet moment or two, and take a couple of deep breaths (or whatever works for you to feel grounded and centered.)
-
Let your own thoughts swirl as you reflect on your connection with your work
-
When you are ready, write your letter. Note: It could be from you, from your work to you, to your tribe or ideal client, whatever feels most meaningful for you. You can even write a letter to your future self or your past self.
-
Not feeling like writing? This also works if you record it, with either audio or video.
-
Now, tuck it away and see what happens. Or, put it in a place where you can see it daily as a reminder. What you do with your letter is up to you.
-
Take a few more deep breaths and connect to the feelings that are present for you. Notice them, and maybe even jot down a few thoughts.
-
That’s it!
Now? Be open to what happens. You just might be surprised and delighted…
